I recently returned from a National Association of Personal
Financial Advisors (NAPFA) conference which I attended as a
speaker and participant covering diverse financial planning
subjects. Other than spending quality time with my coworker
and friend, Bob Arms (and I'm not just saying this because
he made an extra trip back to the hotel to look for my cell
phone that I thought was lost but was instead, umm, buried
in the bottom of my travel bag), the highlight of this
conference was the opportunity to hear from Jack Bogle, one
of my personal heroes in the investment world.

Know the reason for the season
About this time each year I re-read "A Christmas Carol," by
Charles Dickens. By far, the saddest portion of the book is
the scene where the ghost of Christmas past forces Ebenezer
to relive the day his fiancée breaks their engagement and
his heart. While we often assume that Ebenezer did not love
Belle, the sad truth is that Belle never really loved
Scrooge. Belle's financial personality is what Bert Whitehead,
financial expert and author, describes as a "Bon Vivant" in
his book "Facing Financial Dysfunction. " In his book,
Whitehead maps financial personality on two different axes.
